Sounds #04
Artwork ID: ARMSOU0069
I photographed an urban area near Maryhill in Glasgow. This area is approximately three acres in which there are three roads but no housing where it should have been. The area “Maryhill Valley” was demolished in 2005 and has never been regenerated since then. At the time of photographing the area, thick fog had set in over Glasgow and in doing so separated “the Valley” from it’s surroundings. I was able to record it’s elements of design and the physical remnants of its previous life in isolation. The snow on the ground only caused to create a silence almost as if a perfect capsule had been placed over the area. Central to this project is human geography and the relationship we have with our home areas- the idea of place, a place that once was, physical and emotion landscapes, which served a purpose and told a story that then vanishes into the past.
I like the idea that I’m photographing something that doesn’t exist (the housing) and that the normal signs of day/night are not present in this project (it was shot at midday but it seems it’s not entirely obvious). The title “Sounds” refers not only to the actual silence when shooting it but also to the voices of the memories.
